When is it too late to change careers?

When is it too late to change careers?

Via U-Turn Ahead, I found an interesting website called Life Two, which is all about mid-life crises, personal and professional. Some of it hit home.

I like this article about when to change careers. It quotes from a newspaper article that says essentially, if you're going to change, do it before 50, because after that you're too old.

I guess I'm not alone then in thinking that career goals seem to extend only as far as middle age. We grow up with a focus on the first 20 work years -- get a job, build a career, earn good money, then settle in and keep it up for the next 20 years. That's the part I find unsatisfying. There must be more to it for the second half of work life.

When is it too late to find new career goals?

I don't think there is a "too old" age to change careers. I certainly hope not as at 58 I'm planning to leave teaching and go back into industry. I worked in publishing and sales in my 20s and 30s, went into education for the past 20 years, and now in 2 years I want to go back to the private sector. i want to see if I can do all the things I've been teaching to my high school students all these years.

Rather than saying that 50 is too old to make a career change, I would say that 50 brings with it some additional challenges. A lot of it has to do with what opportunities are available. At 40, I believe there are simply more opportunities.

BTW, glad you found LifeTwo...I think it's an interesting website for those of us dealing with midlife changes(and they don't even pay me to plug them).

I don't think it is ever too late to change careers. At 49 I quit my IT job and started an ecommerce business, which led me to my current career - affiliate marketing.

I make money online by selling other people's products. No inventory, no shipping, minimal overhead.

As long as you are willing to learn and work hard there are no age barriers.

to be fair that statement you have other things occupying you is a little hasty i think the first half of life is more of a struggle. you try to get a job, got young family to feed and pressure of finances hopefully by the time im 50 i can be settled and chill out a bit
